- Resonator functions:
The resonator acts as a clock in the circuit, providing a pulse signal of a specific frequency for the entire circuit, so that each component in the circuit can complete the commands rhythmically under this signal.
Because the work of any computer or micro-controller is in accordance with a certain beat, the beat is the clock signal, which is generated by the resonator.
The resonator is mainly used in the CPU circuit with signal processing capability, especially in the single-chip microcomputer.
1. Computer CPU: dealing with complex and huge data, Mainly used for core processors of computers and servers.
2. Single-chip CPU: miniaturized, can handle simple machine assembly language, Complete simple machine instructions. Mainly used in the signal processing board of each circuit.
For example: mobile phone circuit board, circuit board of car igniter, remote control, Cameras, DVDs, etc. are required in the board of the micro-controller.
The client selects the resonator requirements:
The type of the microcontroller is different, and the required operating frequency is different, so the resonator used to provide the specific frequency is different.
Ø For example, USB1.0 has a small transmission speed, a low data volume, and a relatively small required frequency.
Ø USB2.0 has a large transmission speed, a high amount of data, and a relatively large frequency.
For the specific frequency requirements of the resonator, the client determines the resonator of the desired frequency depending on the type of micro-controller used.
Sometimes more than two frequency signals are required in a single board, so more than two resonators must be assembled to provide the pulse signals required by the circuit.
The frequency of our main resonators: 8MHz, 12MHz, 16MHz, 16.93MHz, 20MHz,25MHz, 40MHz, 48MHz, 50MHz and other frequencies.
Difference between quartz crystal resonator and ceramic resonator
- Material difference:
² Quartz crystal resonator: It is processed by cutting a natural piezoelectric material into a desired shape.
² Ceramic Vibrator: A powder with a piezoelectric effect is artificially prepared, and then the powder is compression molded and sintered to make the desired product size.
Since the quartz crystal resonator is cut from a natural material, the axial direction, size and thickness of the cut directly affect the frequency of the quartz crystal resonator, so the frequency of the quartz crystal resonator is affected by the material size, thickness, and shape. The actual processed quartz crystal resonators tend to be large in size and are well suited for highly integrated, high-density surface mount circuit designs.
The ceramic resonator can be modified by the PZT (piezoelectric ceramic material) formulation, so that the frequency of the product is not limited by the material size, and can meet the design of the highly integrated circuit.
The frequency of the ceramic resonator is mainly determined by the thickness of the piezoelectric material. The thicker the thickness, the smaller the frequency, and the thinner the thickness, the higher the frequency.
- The difference in accuracy:
Quartz crystal resonator: high precision, can reach 10PPM ~ 300PPM (0.001% ~ 0.03%).
Mainly used in high-precision instruments and equipment, such as aerospace aircraft, satellite equipment and other circuits.
Ceramic resonator: accuracy is generally 300PPM ~ 5000PPM (0.03% ~ 0.5%)
Mainly used in instruments and equipment that require general frequency accuracy, such as mobile phones, USB, toys,
Game consoles, hard drives, MP Players, DVD/VCDs, cameras, remote controls, various drives, etc.
Example: The time error of a watch using a quartz crystal resonator and a ceramic resonator. The difference in accuracy is the main difference between quartz crystal resonators and ceramic resonators.
At present, our company develops and produces SATA interface with precision: 300PPM ceramic resonator. It has improved the accuracy of the previous PATA interface: 5000PPM ceramic resonator is not precise enough, which is conducive to the market of quartz crystal resonator. Due to its high precision, it can replace a part of quartz crystal resonators, which has a broad market prospect.
